Today was our first community service day. As a house, we went to the garden where my roommate works daily and helped him to clean up all the weeds that had been pulled and piled up. To give you an idea how much there was that we removed from the garden, we filled an industrial-sized dumpster to the rim, and that was only after many rounds of climbing in and jumping on the piles of weeds and dirt (something I don’t recommend doing in the midday sun in New Orleans). One of the most amazing things though was a watermelon that was found in one of the piles.
I personally am not a fan of watermelons, but I was so excited when I found this. It was absolutely adorable. It was so little, but it had the potential to become something greater (if it hadn’t been disconnected from the ground), much like all of us. Size truly doesn’t matter; there is great potential in all of us if only we will stay connected to our roots long enough to establish ourselves in the world. I’ll leave you all to ponder that thought. Until next time, may God bless you in all you do.
